Lorenzo Colombo has joined Genoa on a permanent transfer from Milan, the club confirmed on Thursday. The move sees the striker leave the Rossoneri after a long association with the club, seeking a more prominent role in Alberto Gilardino’s squad. Genoa exercised their option to buy the 21-year-old, formalizing a deal that Colombo believes is crucial for his development.
Colombo explained his decision to move to the Ligurian club, stating that Genoa is a better fit for his career at this stage. Having spent his entire career with Milan, the forward acknowledged the pressure associated with playing for a club with Genoa’s passionate fanbase, expressing his commitment to meeting their expectations. “This club is more suited to me,” Colombo stated, adding, “I have to give more, the fans here rightly demand it.”
The influence of Genoa coach Daniele De Rossi was also highlighted by Colombo as a significant factor in his choice. The Italy legend took over at Genoa in January, quickly turning their season around and securing Serie A safety. Colombo praised De Rossi’s impact, crediting him with improving the team's tactical understanding and overall intelligence on the pitch. “De Rossi has given us footballing intelligence,” Colombo said, emphasizing the positive effect the coach has had on the entire squad.
Colombo progressed through the Milan youth system, making his first-team debut in 2019. He spent time on loan at Cremonese and Lecce before a more consistent spell with Genoa this past season, where he scored six goals in 31 Serie A appearances. Milan will reportedly receive a fee in the region of €4.5 million for the player. The transfer represents a fresh start for Colombo, allowing him to become a central figure in a Genoa side aiming to build on their successful survival campaign. This move allows De Rossi to continue shaping his team, and Colombo will be expected to lead the line as Genoa looks to push further up the Serie A table next season.
