Chelsea have completed the signing of Atalanta full-back Marco Palestra for a fee exceeding €55m, preempting his expected move to Inter Milan, the club confirmed. The 21-year-old, recently named Serie A Defender of the Year, was reportedly favouring a return to his hometown of Milan, but Inter were unable to meet Atalanta’s valuation, allowing Chelsea to secure the deal and offer Palestra a significantly increased wage.
The arrival of Palestra comes amidst other potential movement at Stamford Bridge, with Enzo Fernandez emerging as a target for Real Madrid. According to The Athletic, Manchester United could inadvertently facilitate Fernandez’s departure by pursuing Aurelien Tchouameni. Real Madrid are reportedly keen on Fernandez but need to generate funds through midfield sales, and Tchouameni has been identified as a potential outgoing, aligning with Manchester United’s interest.
Chelsea are also considering Leeds United left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson as a potential replacement for Marc Cucurella, who has moved to Real Madrid, reports Expressen. New manager Xabi Alonso is said to be attracted to Gudmundsson’s versatility, as he is capable of playing both as a traditional full-back and a wing-back. While Gudmundsson is one of several options being evaluated, Leeds are reportedly open to a sale for the right price.
Regarding potential departures, Chelsea would demand a world-record fee – exceeding €80m – for France international Malo Gusto, according to the BBC. This comes amid reported interest from Manchester City, who are set to appoint former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. However, City are unlikely to meet the valuation, as Gusto is not considered a priority target. The Blues are also in a “strong position” to sign Como defender Jacobo Ramon, TEAMtalk writes, though Real Madrid retain a buy-back option that could complicate the transfer. Chelsea are scheduled to meet with Como on Thursday to discuss the futures of both Ramon and Nico Paz. The potential moves reflect a period of significant reshaping of the Chelsea squad under Alonso.
Palestra’s arrival bolsters Chelsea’s defensive options, providing competition and depth at full-back, while the potential sale of Fernandez could free up funds for further investment in midfield.
