Arsenal’s pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez appears to be over, with the Argentina international reportedly indicating a strong preference for a move to Barcelona. This update comes from Matteo Moretto, a journalist closely aligned with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who stated Alvarez would only leave Atletico for the Catalan club.
Alvarez has been a prolific presence for Atletico since joining from Manchester City in 2024, scoring 49 goals and providing 17 assists in 106 appearances. His consistent goalscoring record, averaging a goal or assist every 1.77 games, has attracted attention from several top European clubs.
Arsenal had reportedly held discreet talks with Alvarez’s representatives as early as January, with club chief Andrea Berta leading the discussions. Chelsea were also linked, but their failure to qualify for the Champions League is expected to hinder any potential bid. However, Arsenal now face competition from Paris Saint-Germain, who are also interested in the 26-year-old.
Moretto revealed that Alvarez has made his intentions clear: “If I leave Atletico Madrid, it will only be to Barcelona.” Barcelona are now expected to accelerate their interest, though financial constraints may prove challenging, with a package likely to exceed £104 million. Despite Barcelona’s limitations, Alvarez’s camp reportedly prefer a move that allows him to remain in Spain.
PSG are aggressively pursuing Alvarez as a key component of their evolving sporting project, and are reportedly considering including Goncalo Ramos in a potential deal with Atletico. Arsenal remain in the race and are reportedly open to including Gabriel Martinelli in a player-plus-cash offer. Former Arsenal striker Jeremie Aliadiere believes Alvarez would be a “great fit” for the Gunners, praising his ability to press and contribute offensively.
Atletico manager Diego Simeone acknowledged the interest from top clubs, stating it was “normal” that a player of Alvarez’s quality would be sought after. While Arsenal continue to explore other options, they face an uphill battle to convince Alvarez to choose the Emirates Stadium over the Camp Nou.
