Como are beginning preparations for their first Champions League campaign, with manager Cesc Fabregas indicating the need for more experienced players to supplement their young squad. Following their promotion to Serie A and subsequent qualification for Europe’s premier club competition, the club held a technical meeting on Saturday to discuss potential summer transfers.
Fabregas stated post-match after securing promotion that while he enjoys working with young players, the Champions League requires a different profile of player, specifically those with more experience. The current Como squad is largely comprised of players under the age of 23, and the club is looking to add players in an intermediate age bracket to provide leadership and stability.
The club also faces constraints regarding UEFA squad lists, which require a minimum number of players developed in the Como youth system and in other Italian academies. Currently, Como only have two senior players who meet the criteria – goalkeeper Vigorito and defender Goldaniga – and are looking to bolster this number through promotions from their recently crowned Primavera (youth) team and potential signings.
Como are particularly focused on strengthening their defense and midfield. Potential targets include Pietro Comuzzo of Fiorentina, a central defender, although the Viola are reportedly seeking a fee in the region of €20-25 million. Alessandro Marcandalli of Genoa, known for his passing range and ability to build from the back, is also under consideration. In midfield, Fabregas is again showing interest in Juventus’s Miretti, who was a target in the previous transfer window and has seen limited playing time under Massimiliano Allegri.
Juventus’s Cambiaso, a more experienced international player, is also being monitored. Cambiaghi of Bologna is another option for the left flank. The club’s president, Suwarso, will have final approval on any deals from a financial perspective, working closely with sporting director Ludi and head of development Roberts. These additions are intended to create a more balanced squad capable of competing at the highest level.
This proactive approach to the transfer market signals Como’s ambition to not just participate in the Champions League, but to establish themselves as a competitive force in Serie A.
