Antonio Conte is poised to become the next manager of the Italy national team after informing Napoli of his intention to leave, according to reports in the Italian press. The former Juventus and Chelsea manager communicated his decision to Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis following a successful but turbulent two-year spell with the club, which included a Serie A title and a Supercoppa Italiana victory.
Conte’s departure from Napoli comes despite a trophy-laden period, with reports suggesting disagreements and tensions behind the scenes. He previously managed Italy from 2014 to 2016, leading them to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 before stepping down to take charge of Chelsea. His time with the national team ended after a penalty shootout defeat to Germany, and he reportedly declined opportunities to continue in the role due to attractive offers from clubs.
This time, however, Conte appears more receptive to returning to the national setup, viewing it as an opportunity to revitalize Italian football following its failure to qualify for the last two World Cups. He alluded to his interest in the role after Napoli’s victory over Milan in April, stating he would be a candidate the Italian Football Federation should consider, given his prior experience with the national team. The appointment would see Conte attempt a similar rescue mission to the one he undertook in 2014, when he took over from Cesare Prandelli after a disappointing World Cup campaign.
Luciano Spalletti is expected to remain as the manager of Juventus, seemingly ending Conte’s hopes of a return to his former club in the immediate future. Other managerial changes are also anticipated across Serie A, with Roberto Mancini, Maurizio Sarri, Vincenzo Italiano, Fabio Grosso, and Raffaele Palladino all potentially seeking new clubs. The domino effect of Conte’s decision could reshape the managerial landscape of Italian football this summer. The Italian Football Federation has yet to officially confirm Conte’s appointment, but the widespread reporting suggests an announcement is imminent.
Conte’s potential return to the national team could signal a shift in approach for Italy, known for his tactical pragmatism and focus on defensive solidity. His experience and proven track record could be crucial in rebuilding the team and restoring its competitiveness on the international stage.
