Coppa Italia outcome could deny Atalanta European football
Atalanta’s hopes of European qualification could be dashed by Lazio’s success in the Coppa Italia, according to analysis of Serie A’s European slot allocation. Should Lazio win the cup final against Inter next month and finish outside Serie A’s top seven, they would claim Italy’s second Europa League spot. This scenario would leave the current seventh-placed team, Atalanta, excluded from continental competition entirely if they cannot improve their league position.
Currently, Italy is allocated four Champions League places, two Europa League spots, and one Europa Conference League berth for next season. Based on the present standings, Atalanta occupies the Conference League place in seventh. However, the Coppa Italia winner is guaranteed a Europa League group stage place. If the cup winner finishes in a European qualification spot via the league, the extra place is not created, and the allocation proceeds as normal.
The complication arises if Lazio, currently ninth and seven points behind Atalanta, wins the cup but finishes eighth or lower. In that case, Lazio would take a Europa League place alongside the league’s fifth-placed team. The league’s sixth-placed side would then move into the Conference League spot, and the seventh-placed team would be left with nothing. This means Atalanta’s fate is not entirely in their own hands, despite holding a position that typically comes with a European reward.
For Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta, this adds a painful twist to their recent Coppa Italia elimination, where they lost to Lazio on penalties in the semi-final. The Bergamo club must now aim to finish sixth or higher to guarantee a European slot, irrespective of the cup outcome. This requires overtaking either Roma or Como, who currently sit fifth and sixth respectively. The situation underscores the high stakes of the final weeks of the Serie A season, where the battle for European places is intensely compressed.
From Lazio’s perspective, winning the Coppa Italia offers a potential route back into Europe after a disappointing league campaign under Maurizio Sarri’s successor, Igor Tudor. Their league form has been inconsistent, making the cup final their most likely path to continental football. The final will be played on May 15th, with the Serie A season concluding on May 26th, setting up a dramatic simultaneous conclusion to both competitions. The implications extend beyond these two clubs, affecting the calculations of Roma, Como, and Fiorentina, who are also in the mix for fifth through seventh places.
Historically, Atalanta has been a consistent presence in Europe under Gasperini, having qualified for continental competition in six of the last seven seasons. Missing out would represent a significant setback for the club’s project and financial planning. The coming weeks will therefore see intense focus on both the San Siro for the cup final and the Serie A table, where a single position could be the difference between a European campaign and an empty calendar on Thursday nights next season.
