Thibaut Courtois has publicly stated his intention to conclude his playing career at Real Madrid, effectively dismissing any possibility of a return to Belgian club football. The 33-year-old goalkeeper made the declaration during Belgium’s World Cup campaign, stating, “My goal is to finish my career at Real Madrid.”
This commitment aligns with previous statements Courtois has made since the mid-2020s, consistently expressing his desire to remain with the Spanish giants. His current contract with Real Madrid extends to 2027, but according to Managing Madrid, an agreement in principle is in place for a further extension to 2028, which would see him remain at the club until the age of 36.
Courtois was definitive in ruling out a move back to Belgium, stating, “I’m not thinking about playing in Belgium again. For me, the Pro League is a closed chapter.” He specifically mentioned Genk, the club where he began his professional career, acknowledging their current goalkeeping talent before reaffirming his commitment to Madrid. He indicated that his focus remains solely on success with Los Blancos.
The anticipated extension to 2028 represents a departure from Real Madrid’s usual policy of offering only one-year renewals to players over 30, highlighting Courtois’s importance to the club’s long-term plans. Since joining from Chelsea in 2018 for approximately €35 million, Courtois has made over 200 competitive appearances for Real Madrid, winning both La Liga and Champions League titles.
While acknowledging the need for the club to eventually consider his replacement, Courtois pointed to Andriy Lunin and academy prospect Fran González as potential successors. The management of this goalkeeping hierarchy over the next few seasons will be a key aspect of the club’s planning, especially if the 2028 extension is finalized. The recent contract extension for Antonio Rüdiger suggests a broader strategy of securing the club’s established core players.
Courtois also expressed frustration with inaccurate reporting about him in the Spanish media, claiming that a significant percentage of stories are fabricated. He awaits a formal announcement of his contract extension following the conclusion of international duties. The details of the extension, particularly any performance-based clauses given his history with injuries including a 2023 ACL rupture, are yet to be revealed.
