Inter Milan have announced a one-year contract extension for manager Cristian Chivu, the club confirmed via social media. The 45-year-old’s deal was previously set to expire in 2027, and the extension will see him remain in charge of the Nerazzurri until 2028.
Chivu took over as Inter Milan manager ahead of the 2023-24 season and enjoyed a successful debut campaign. He guided the team to the Serie A title, finishing eleven points ahead of second-placed Milan, and also secured the Coppa Italia with a 2-0 victory over Lazio. However, Inter’s Champions League campaign was less successful, as they were eliminated in the play-off round by Bodø/Glimt.
Prior to becoming manager, Chivu enjoyed a distinguished playing career, notably spending four seasons at Inter Milan as a defender from 2007 to 2011. He was part of the Inter side that won the Champions League, Serie A, and Coppa Italia treble in the 2009-10 season under José Mourinho. He also earned 89 caps for Romania during his international career.
The decision to extend Chivu’s contract reflects the club’s satisfaction with his performance and their belief in his ability to build on the team’s recent success. Inter will be hoping Chivu can lead them to further silverware and a more sustained challenge in the Champions League, aiming to replicate the European glory achieved during his time as a player. This extension provides stability and continuity as the club looks to maintain its position as a leading force in Italian and European football.
