Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella has stated he is ‘very happy’ at the club, despite recent reports suggesting he has requested a transfer away from Stamford Bridge. The 27-year-old addressed speculation linking him with moves to Manchester United, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid while on international duty with Spain ahead of their World Cup match against Cape Verde.
Reports from Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claimed Cucurella had informed Chelsea of his desire to leave, citing a lack of long-term future under the newly appointed manager, Xabi Alonso. The report indicated both the player and the club were open to a summer transfer, provided an appropriate offer was received. Cucurella’s contract with Chelsea runs until 2029, meaning the Blues would likely seek a fee in the region of €40-50 million (£34.5-£43m) for his services.
However, speaking to El Partidazo de COPE, Cucurella refuted the suggestion he is actively seeking an exit. “Right now I don’t want to talk about that,” he said. “It’s true that I’m very happy where I am, I’m very happy, my family is very happy.” He added, “Whatever you do, don’t drive me crazy. I don’t like to be burdened with worries.”
Cucurella joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2022 for a reported fee of £62 million. While he has been a regular starter for the Blues, the club’s disappointing 10th-place finish in the Premier League and failure to qualify for European football has led to uncertainty surrounding the future of several players. Alonso’s arrival as manager is expected to trigger a squad overhaul. Interest from Manchester United stems from their need for a left-sided full-back, while a return to Spain with Barcelona or Atletico Madrid would offer Cucurella the chance to play in La Liga again.
Despite the ongoing speculation, Cucurella’s comments suggest he is currently content at Chelsea. Should he ultimately depart, the club will be in a strong position to command a significant transfer fee, given his existing contract.
