Michaël Cuisance is set to move from Hertha BSC to RC Lens in a permanent transfer worth approximately €5 million, according to Sky Germany. The French midfielder will reunite with new Lens manager Dino Toppmöller at the Ligue 1 club. The deal represents a swift departure for Cuisance from Hertha, who play in the German second tier.
Cuisance joined Hertha in August 2023 from Venezia, initially on a loan deal which was then made permanent. He made 27 appearances for the club across all competitions, contributing with two goals and three assists. Despite showing flashes of his technical ability, Cuisance’s time in Berlin was hampered by inconsistency and the club’s overall struggles, which ultimately led to their relegation from the Bundesliga.
RC Lens enjoyed a successful 2023-24 Ligue 1 campaign, finishing second behind Paris Saint-Germain and securing a place in the Champions League group stage. The club recently appointed Dino Toppmöller as their new head coach, replacing Pierre Sage, and are clearly looking to bolster their squad ahead of their European commitments. Toppmöller will be familiar with Cuisance’s skillset, potentially unlocking the player’s full potential.
Cuisance began his professional career with Borussia Mönchengladbach, progressing through their youth academy before making his first-team debut in 2017. He later had spells at Bayern Munich and Leeds United, although his time at both clubs was relatively short-lived. The move to Lens offers Cuisance a chance to reignite his career and play regular Champions League football, an opportunity he may not have had with Hertha.
The €5 million fee represents a reasonable return for Hertha, given Cuisance’s age and recent performances. The sale will also free up space in the Hertha squad and potentially allow them to invest in other areas. Lens, meanwhile, will be hoping Cuisance can provide creativity and quality in midfield as they challenge on multiple fronts next season.
