Roberto D'Aversa has departed Torino following the club’s announcement of Ignazio Abate as their new head coach for the upcoming season. The news was confirmed by D'Aversa himself via a post on Instagram, where he expressed gratitude to the club, staff, players, and supporters.
D'Aversa thanked Torino for providing him with the opportunity to manage what he described as “one of the most prestigious and historic benches in the world.” He also extended his appreciation to the coaching staff and the players, acknowledging their dedication during training and their commitment while representing the club. He referred to the squad as “my boys” and stated they would “forever” hold a special place with him.
The Italian manager specifically addressed the Torino fanbase, expressing his affection for their support and friendship, and thanking them for instilling in him the spirit of the club and the values associated with Superga, a site of historical significance for Torino supporters. D'Aversa acknowledged receiving a large volume of messages and expressed regret at being unable to respond to each one individually.
D'Aversa’s message continued, stating he would have preferred to experience recent events differently but accepted the nature of football. He expressed pride in achieving the club’s objectives and contributing to the development of the squad’s quality, adding that he would carry with him the satisfaction of having lived by the principles he teaches his three children: setting goals, pursuing a path, and overcoming obstacles.
Abate’s appointment marks a change in direction for Torino, with the former AC Milan defender stepping into his first senior managerial role. D'Aversa was appointed in July 2023, guiding Torino to a mid-table finish in Serie A. The decision to move forward with Abate suggests the club is seeking a longer-term project focused on developing young talent and implementing a new tactical approach. This change could signal a shift in Torino’s ambitions as they look to establish themselves as a consistent top-half team in the Italian top flight.
