Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi is interested in signing Brighton and Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke, however, Liverpool have emerged as frontrunners for the 25-year-old Netherlands international, according to sources at TEAMtalk. The summer transfer window is approaching, and Brighton are anticipating a significant battle to retain one of their key players.
Van Hecke has established himself as a prominent centre-back in the Premier League, attracting attention from several top-flight clubs. He joined Brighton from NAC Breda in 2020 and has consistently impressed with his composure, aerial ability, and leadership qualities. While his current contract with Brighton extends to June 2027, negotiations for a new deal have stalled, with Van Hecke reportedly seeking a move to a club offering a higher level of competition.
Liverpool recently initiated contact with Van Hecke’s representatives, with new manager Arne Slot identifying the defender as a potential reinforcement for the Reds’ backline. Tottenham are also actively pursuing Van Hecke, with De Zerbi particularly eager to secure a reunion with the player he previously worked with at Brighton. This existing relationship could prove advantageous for Spurs in negotiations.
Furthermore, Van Hecke shares a close friendship with Tottenham’s centre-back Micky van de Ven, which could also influence his decision. Landing Van Hecke might also assist Tottenham in retaining the services of Van de Ven. TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey reported earlier this week that Van Hecke would be receptive to a move to Tottenham to work under De Zerbi. However, Tottenham’s potential relegation from the Premier League would likely end their pursuit of the Dutchman.
Chelsea and Newcastle United have also expressed interest in Van Hecke, although Chelsea’s enquiry is described as being in its early stages. Newcastle have been long-term admirers of the player, monitoring his progress for several transfer windows. Brighton are bracing themselves for substantial bids, with a valuation of around £60 million being reported. Despite their desire to keep Van Hecke, the club acknowledges that a departure is becoming increasingly probable given the level of interest from other Premier League clubs. His consistent performances this season have further enhanced his market value.
