Tottenham Hotspur are experiencing the most expensive summer transfer window in their history, backing manager Roberto De Zerbi with significant investment as the club aims to return to the Premier League’s top six. The club has already spent close to £280 million on new players, surpassing the £247 million spent during the summer of 2023.
The spending spree began with the acquisition of Dutch international defender Jan Paul Van Hecke from Brighton for £52 million on June 19th. This was followed by the arrival of Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from relegated West Ham United for £85 million. According to sources, Tottenham are on the verge of completing a deal for Newcastle United’s Italian international midfielder Sandro Tonali, a transfer that could reach £120 million including bonuses.
De Zerbi, appointed on March 31st following a brief spell for Igor Tudor, had immediately signaled his desire for a significant overhaul of the squad, stating his ambition to build “the team of my dreams.” These ambitions have been supported by the club’s ownership, with a commitment to “revive the spirit of the club” and restore “spectacular football.”
This level of investment represents a significant shift for Tottenham, the ninth richest club in the world according to Deloitte. De Zerbi’s spending already exceeds the £260 million spent on player acquisitions during his time at Olympique de Marseille, where he was the club’s most expensive manager in history, although that period did not yield any trophies.
Beyond the completed deals, Tottenham have also brought in Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka on free transfers. The club is also actively pursuing further attacking reinforcements, with Brazilian winger Savinho of Manchester City a key target, potentially costing around £60 million. The influx of talent suggests Tottenham are determined to avoid another relegation battle and establish themselves as a consistent force in the Premier League.
