De Zerbi's Tottenham Debut Ends in Defeat as Spurs Slip into Relegation Zone
Roberto De Zerbi's first match in charge of Tottenham Hotspur ended in a 1-0 defeat away to Sunderland, a result that plunged his new side into the Premier League relegation zone. The only goal of the game came in the 61st minute when Nordi Mukiele's strike secured a 1-0 victory for Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The loss, combined with other results, sees Tottenham drop into the bottom three, two points from safety.
The defeat marks a nightmare start for De Zerbi, who was appointed only days before the match. The Italian manager, formerly of Marseille, took charge of a side low on confidence and mired in a poor run of form. The result, coupled with West Ham's victory on Friday, saw Spurs slip to 18th place in the Premier League table.
In his post-match comments, De Zerbi acknowledged the psychological challenge facing his new squad. "Yes, I believe so," he responded when asked if the fear of relegation was a problem for his players. He described a squad of "good guys" who are suffering due to the team's position. The manager emphasized the need for a mental shift, stating, "We are Tottenham, but we will not win a game just because we are Tottenham. We have to win by fighting on the pitch. We must stay united, be positive, work, improve, and above all, improve mentally."
Despite the dire situation, De Zerbi expressed a cautious, long-term optimism, focusing on the need for a psychological boost. "I remain optimistic. I know the boys as people and as players. They have sufficient quality to win a match, and the closest objective is to win a match. If we win one match, we can see everything differently," he explained. The manager also expressed concern for Cristian Romero, who left the pitch in tears with a potential knee injury, describing the defender as a "top player of great personality" who is fundamental to the team's survival hopes.
In other Premier League action, Manchester City kept their title challenge on track with a 3-0 win away at Chelsea, with goals from O'Reilly, Guehi, and Doku. The victory, City's third consecutive win, keeps the pressure on leaders Arsenal, who they face next weekend. The result consolidates City's second place, now sitting six points behind the Gunners with a game in hand.
Elsewhere, Aston Villa were held to a 1-1 draw by Nottingham Forest, while Crystal Palace secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Newcastle United. The defeat leaves Tottenham's situation increasingly precarious, with De Zerbi's immediate task being to lift the squad's fragile mentality ahead of a critical run of fixtures. The Italian's focus on the psychological aspect of the game will be put to the test immediately as the club fights for its top-flight status.
