Tottenham's Debut Defeat Under De Zerbi Sees Spurs Slip Into Relegation Zone
Tottenham Hotspur's new manager, Roberto De Zerbi, suffered a losing start as his side fell 1-0 to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, a result that sees the club drop into the Premier League relegation zone. The only goal of the match came in the 61st minute from Sunderland's Nordi Mukiele, a goal that pushed Spurs into 18th place, two points from safety.
De Zerbi, who was appointed after the sacking of Ange Postecoglou, oversaw a disappointing debut. The defeat was compounded by a 4-0 victory for West Ham over Wolverhampton, which allowed the Hammers to climb above Tottenham in the table. The loss leaves Spurs in a precarious position with just a handful of games remaining in the season.
In his post-match comments, De Zerbi acknowledged the pressure but remained optimistic. "I believe in this group," the Italian manager stated. "Yes, I believe so," he said when asked if the fear of relegation was the primary issue. He emphasized the need for mental fortitude, stating, "We are Tottenham, but we will not win a game just because we are Tottenham. We have to fight on the pitch. We must stay united, be positive, work, improve, and above all, improve mentally."
De Zerbi also expressed concern for defender Cristian Romero, who left the pitch in tears after suffering a knee injury. "We have to wait for the next few days," De Zerbi said. "I hope it is not a serious problem because he is a top player, a great guy, a great personality, and we need him to finish the season and reach our objective."
The manager remained defiant about the club's situation. "I remain optimistic," De Zerbi explained. "I know the lads as people and as players. And because of that, I am positive. They have the quality to win a game, and the nearest target is to win a match, because if we win one, we can see everything differently."
Meanwhile, the Premier League title race continued as Manchester City secured a 3-0 victory at Stamford Bridge with goals from Callum O'Reilly, Marc Guehi, and Jérémy Doku. The win keeps the pressure on league leaders Arsenal, with City now just six points behind the Gunners with a game in hand, setting up a crucial clash between the two sides next weekend.
In the day's other results, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa played to a 1-1 draw, with Murillo's own goal for Villa canceled out by Neco Williams. Crystal Palace secured a dramatic 2-1 win over Newcastle United, with Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring a 94th-minute winner after an Adalberto Penaranda own goal had cancelled out Michael Olise's first-half strike for the Eagles.
