RB Leipzig have confirmed the appointment of Martín Demichelis as their new head coach, with the Argentine signing a contract until June 30, 2028. Demichelis replaces Ole Werner, taking over the Bundesliga side ahead of the 2026-27 season. The move brings an end to his time at RCD Mallorca, where he had been in charge since 2023.
According to a club statement released today, Leipzig’s managing director of sport, Marcel Schäfer, highlighted Demichelis’s international experience as a key factor in the decision. Schäfer noted the coach’s work at the highest levels in Europe, South America, and North America, aligning with Leipzig’s global outlook. He also emphasized Demichelis’s “clear playing philosophy” and “high intensity” as attributes the club values.
Demichelis’s coaching career began with assistant roles at Málaga and within the Bayern Munich youth setup. He then transitioned to head coaching positions, first with River Plate in Argentina, where he won the Primera División in 2023. Following his success in Argentina, he moved to CF Monterrey in Mexico before accepting the role at Mallorca in La Liga.
At Mallorca, Demichelis oversaw a period of stability, guiding the club to a mid-table finish in the Spanish top flight. His tactical approach typically focuses on a high-pressing game with a strong emphasis on possession, a style that could prove well-suited to RB Leipzig’s existing system. The appointment suggests Leipzig are seeking to maintain their competitive edge in the Bundesliga and continue their progression in European competitions.
This appointment signals a commitment from Leipzig to a proactive and attacking style of football, hoping Demichelis can build upon the foundations laid by previous coaches and further develop the club’s young and talented squad.
