Depay defends Brazil move and reaffirms Netherlands commitment
Memphis Depay has addressed the scrutiny surrounding his move to Brazilian club Corinthians and his continued role with the Netherlands national team. The 30-year-old forward, speaking in an interview with Dutch broadcaster Ziggo Sport, insisted his transfer to South America has not diminished his ambitions on the international stage, stating his clear desire to win a trophy with the Oranje. His comments come after Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman recently highlighted the importance of Depay's physical condition, a remark noted after the player missed a recent national team gathering.
Depay joined Corinthians in September 2024 and has since scored 20 goals for the club, including one in their Brazilian Cup final victory last December. Despite the success, his move away from European football has raised questions about his readiness for the upcoming World Cup. In his interview, Depay pushed back against his critics, pointing to his prolific record in World Cup qualification. "I scored 23 goals in 23 matches during the World Cup qualifiers," Depay said. "Of course, we face weaker teams, but someone has to score, right?"
The former Barcelona, Lyon, and Manchester United attacker is the all-time leading scorer for the Netherlands with 45 goals. He acknowledged the persistent nature of the criticism he faces, tracing it back to his early career. "The criticism I often receive doesn't bother me too much, because I can't prevent it. I've been confronted with it for a long time. I already had detractors at 16," he recalled. He also noted a disconnect in perception, adding, "Brazilians don't understand why people speak poorly of me in the Netherlands."
The core of Depay's message was a reaffirmation of his commitment as the Netherlands prepares for the tournament. "I have not yet finished my adventure with the Dutch national team," he stated. "I just want to win a title with the Oranje." This summer's World Cup would be his third, after appearances in 2014 and 2022. His form in Brazil, coupled with his historical importance to the Dutch side, makes him a likely candidate for selection, provided he maintains fitness.
For Corinthians, Depay's signing has proven to be a significant success, bringing star power and crucial goals that contributed directly to silverware. His adaptation to Brazilian football appears seamless, bolstering his argument that the move has not hindered his quality. The situation presents a nuanced challenge for Koeman, who must balance Depay's undeniable goal threat with the practical considerations of integrating a player based outside Europe. Depay's public statements seem aimed at alleviating any doubts about his motivation as the World Cup approaches.
