FC Köln are planning to retain interim head coach René Wagner on a permanent basis if he secures the club's Bundesliga status for next season, according to Sky Germany. The club's board is reportedly prepared to offer Wagner a contract extending beyond the summer, contingent on mathematical safety being achieved in the coming weeks. The immediate focus is on this weekend's crucial match away at Union Berlin, a game that could seal their top-flight survival.
Köln's fate could be decided as early as Saturday, though it depends on results elsewhere. A victory over Union Berlin would be enough if second-division promotion contenders St. Pauli fail to win at home against Mainz. A draw could also suffice for Köln, provided St. Pauli lose, due to Köln's superior goal difference. However, this scenario also requires Wolfsburg not to win their away fixture against Freiburg on Sunday. Should results not go their way this weekend, Köln would have a final chance to secure safety in their own hands on the last matchday, when they host bottom club Heidenheim.
The 47-year-old Wagner, a former Köln player, was appointed on an interim basis in April following the dismissal of Timo Schultz with the club deep in a relegation battle. Sporting director Thomas Kessler has publicly backed the coach's impact, stating, “What we expected from him, René has been able to put in place. That is not easy in the environment around 1. FC Köln.” Under his stewardship, Köln have shown improved resilience, collecting vital points in a tense run-in.
Wagner's potential permanent appointment represents a significant vote of confidence from the Köln hierarchy, who are seeking stability after a turbulent season. It would mark his first permanent head coaching role at the senior level after previously working with the club's youth teams and as an assistant. For Wagner, securing survival would not only achieve the club's primary objective but also earn him a longer-term opportunity to shape the squad.
The decision underscores a pragmatic approach from Köln's leadership, valuing continuity and Wagner's understanding of the club's culture during a precarious period. Should he succeed, the focus will swiftly shift to planning for a more stable 2024/25 Bundesliga campaign, with Wagner likely given the mandate to build a more competitive squad over the summer transfer window.
