Dutch Derby Delayed After Masked Zwolle Supporters Cause Disturbance
The Eredivisie derby between Go Ahead Eagles and PEC Zwolle was delayed by over 90 minutes on Sunday after a group of away supporters refused to remove face coverings and ignited fireworks inside the stadium. The match, known as the IJsselderby, eventually kicked off at 1:50 PM local time instead of the scheduled 12:15 PM start after police intervened to eject the disruptive fans from Deventer's De Adelaarshorst stadium.
According to reports from Dutch media outlet AD, a section of Zwolle's 'Blauwvingers' ultras entered the away section wearing masks and balaclavas, a direct violation of a ban on face coverings implemented for this high-risk fixture. The supporters then proceeded to launch pyrotechnics towards the home fans. Prior to the match, both the Zwolle club management and captain Ryan Thomas had appealed to the supporters to remove the masks, but their requests were ignored.
This incident marred one of Dutch football's historic local rivalries, with the two clubs from Deventer and Zwolle separated by just 30 kilometers. The early kick-off time is a standard measure in the Netherlands aimed at reducing alcohol-related disorder, but it failed to prevent this pre-planned act of defiance from a segment of the travelling support. The police action to clear the section caused the significant delay to the start of the match.
On the pitch, the disrupted preparations appeared to heavily impact the visiting team. PEC Zwolle, who famously won the Johan Cruijff Shield in 2014, fell to a heavy 5-0 defeat against their rivals. The comprehensive loss deals a blow to Zwolle's ambitions in the league, while providing a memorable, if chaotic, victory for Go Ahead Eagles in the derby fixture.
The incident is likely to prompt a review by the Dutch football authorities (KNVB) and could result in sanctions against PEC Zwolle. Dutch clubs can face fines or be forced to play matches behind closed doors if their supporters are found to have breached safety regulations. This event continues a challenging season for Zwolle, who have struggled for consistency and now face scrutiny over fan conduct.
For Go Ahead Eagles, the victory is a positive result overshadowed by security concerns. The club will cooperate with any investigation while taking the three points. The delay and disorder, however, serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in managing intense local rivalries and enforcing stadium safety protocols, even with preventative scheduling measures in place.
