France manager Didier Deschamps has moved to reassure supporters regarding the fitness of defender William Saliba ahead of the World Cup. Deschamps stated in a press conference that Saliba is in good condition and is being carefully managed, despite not featuring in recent matches.
While acknowledging Saliba’s readiness to play if a match were held immediately, Deschamps confirmed the player would not be risked unnecessarily. This cautious approach reflects the importance of managing players’ fitness levels during the international break, particularly with the World Cup tournament looming. Deschamps also alluded to the need to carefully manage the expectations of all squad members vying for starting positions.
Saliba has become a key figure in the French national team setup, and is widely expected to be a starter in the opening match against Senegal. His consistent performances for Arsenal in the Premier League have solidified his place in Deschamps’ plans. The 21-year-old centre-back has been instrumental in Arsenal’s strong defensive record this season, forming a formidable partnership with Gabriel Magalhães.
Deschamps also hinted that he has a clear idea of his starting eleven but is remaining flexible, suggesting that up to 14 players could be considered for a starting role. He emphasized the importance of assessing players’ form and adapting to the specific challenges posed by opponents, particularly considering the unique conditions of playing in the United States. This measured approach suggests Deschamps is prioritizing a pragmatic and adaptable strategy for the tournament. The manager also playfully teased the media, suggesting they should already have some idea of his preferred lineup.
