France manager Didier Deschamps has identified eight nations as potential winners of the upcoming World Cup in Qatar, according to an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport. Deschamps listed France, Spain, Germany, England, Portugal, Argentina, Brazil, and Morocco as the teams most likely to lift the trophy.
The French coach highlighted Spain’s increased pace under new manager Luis de la Fuente, noting it presents a difficult challenge for opponents. He also pointed to the quality within the German squad and expressed his admiration for Thomas Tuchel’s England team. Deschamps cautioned against underestimating Portugal and acknowledged the strength of South American contenders Argentina and Brazil, while also suggesting Morocco’s continued progress makes them a dark horse.
Despite naming his own nation among the favourites, Deschamps stressed the importance of avoiding complacency within the French squad and coaching staff. He warned against assuming a place in the final on July 19th, anticipating challenging moments throughout the tournament. Deschamps referenced France’s defeat to Switzerland at Euro 2020 as a reminder that maximum effort is always required at the highest level, stating that any lapse in intensity is immediately punished.
This assessment comes after a recent 2-1 friendly defeat for France against Ivory Coast, serving as a potential wake-up call ahead of the World Cup. Deschamps’ comments underscore the competitive nature of the tournament and his desire for his team to remain focused and humble despite their status as one of the leading contenders. The World Cup begins next Thursday, with France among the teams expected to challenge for the title.
