Dino Toppmöller has been appointed as the new head coach of RC Lens, the Ligue 1 club confirmed on Tuesday. The 45-year-old German manager arrives in France following his departure from Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this year, replacing Pierre Sage who recently moved to Crystal Palace. Toppmöller’s appointment brings an end to a managerial search for Lens, as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Toppmöller was relieved of his duties at Eintracht Frankfurt in January, despite a relatively successful tenure that saw the club finish seventh in the Bundesliga during the 2023-24 campaign. He had taken over at the Deutsche Bank Park in the summer of 2023, succeeding Oliver Glasner and guiding the team through a period of transition. Prior to his time in Frankfurt, Toppmöller gained experience as an assistant coach at both RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich, working under Julian Nagelsmann and Hansi Flick respectively. These roles provided him with exposure to high-pressure environments and successful footballing philosophies.
According to reports, Toppmöller was a target for several other clubs following his availability. AC Milan and Crystal Palace were both linked with an approach, alongside numerous teams from the Saudi Pro League, indicating the high regard in which he is held within European football. However, it is RC Lens who have secured his services, offering him a new challenge in Ligue 1. Lens finished sixth in the French top flight last season, narrowly missing out on European qualification.
The move to Lens represents an opportunity for Toppmöller to establish himself as a head coach in a competitive European league. Lens, known for their passionate fanbase and ambitious project, will hope Toppmöller can build upon their recent progress and challenge for a European spot. The appointment signals the club’s intent to compete at the highest level, and Toppmöller’s tactical acumen and experience will be crucial in achieving their goals. His arrival is expected to inject fresh ideas and a new approach to the Lens squad.
