Midfielder Niklas Dorsch has completed a permanent transfer from 1.FC Heidenheim to Toronto FC, the clubs confirmed on Tuesday afternoon. The move comes after Dorsch expressed his desire to join the Major League Soccer side. Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed.
Dorsch returns to Toronto FC having previously played for the club in 2017, making 26 appearances and scoring one goal. He then spent time with KAA Gent in Belgium before returning to Germany with 1.FC Heidenheim in 2020. During his two spells with Heidenheim, the 28-year-old made a total of 133 competitive appearances, contributing five goals and twelve assists.
Heidenheim head coach Frank Schmidt acknowledged the disappointment of losing a key player but also expressed understanding of Dorsch’s decision. According to Schmidt, Dorsch was intended to be a central figure and leader for the team in the upcoming season. However, Schmidt stated the club were prepared for potential departures during the summer transfer window.
“It was another two great years with ‘Dorschi,’ in which he contributed a great deal to our team,” Schmidt said. “Our goal of having a good start to the season remains unchanged.” Schmidt also highlighted the depth within the Heidenheim squad, indicating they have players capable of filling the void left by Dorsch’s departure.
The transfer provides Toronto FC with an experienced midfielder familiar with the club’s environment. Dorsch’s move will likely bolster their options in the center of the park as they prepare for the upcoming MLS season. Heidenheim, meanwhile, will need to integrate other midfield options to maintain their competitiveness in the 2. Bundesliga.
