Borussia Dortmund defeated Werder Bremen 2-0 in a Bundesliga match on Friday, with Serhou Guirassy finally breaking the deadlock against Bremen goalkeeper Mio Backhaus. The victory concludes Dortmund’s season, securing a second-place finish, while Bremen remain in 15th position in the league table.
Prior to the match, Werder Bremen held 32 points, comfortably positioned to avoid relegation concerns, while Dortmund had already cemented their status as likely runners-up to Bayern Munich. The game at a sold-out Weserstadion was described as a relaxed affair despite the mild temperatures.
The match also marked a farewell for several players. Werder Bremen’s Leonardo Bittencourt, a former Dortmund player, was absent from the starting lineup, as were Dortmund’s Julian Brandt and Niklas Süle, the latter of whom is retiring. Süle’s departure signifies the end of an era for the defender, who has been a mainstay in several Bundesliga sides.
Bremen’s goalkeeper, Mio Backhaus, was in inspired form early on, denying Samuele Inacio and Guirassy to prevent Dortmund from taking an early lead. However, Guirassy eventually found the net in the 60th minute, heading home a cross from Julian Ryerson for his 17th league goal of the season. Ryerson’s assist brought his tally to 15 for the campaign.
Werder Bremen attempted to respond, with a goal from Amos Pieper being ruled out for offside before half-time and another from Karim Coulibaly being disallowed in the 81st minute. Dortmund sealed the victory in added time through a late goal from Yan Couto, completing a 22nd win of the season and finishing with 73 points.
Dortmund’s strong performance throughout the season, resulting in 73 points, would have been enough to win the league in many years, but ultimately fell short against the dominant Bayern Munich, finishing 16 points behind the champions. This result confirms Dortmund’s consistent performance as a top contender in German football, despite not being able to overcome Bayern’s dominance.
