Borussia Dortmund have expressed interest in Werder Bremen goalkeeper Mio Backhaus, according to a report from DeichStube. The Bundesliga side are considering the 22-year-old as a potential long-term replacement for current number one Gregor Kobel.
Backhaus has emerged as a target for several clubs across Europe, with Newcastle United already reported to have contacted the player’s representatives. AC Milan, Inter Milan, Brighton & Hove Albion, Bayer Leverkusen, and SC Freiburg have also been linked with a move for the German shot-stopper, intensifying the competition for his signature.
Werder Bremen have not yet received any official bids for Backhaus, despite the growing interest. The club may be preparing for a potential sale, however, with Arsenal loanee Karl Hein identified as a possible permanent replacement should Backhaus depart. Bremen secured Hein on a loan deal with a purchase option, providing a ready-made solution should they lose their current goalkeeper.
Backhaus has established himself as a regular starter for Werder Bremen this season, featuring in 26 Bundesliga matches. He joined the club’s youth setup in 2014 and progressed through the ranks, making his first-team debut in 2021. His consistent performances have attracted attention from several top clubs, highlighting his potential as one of the Bundesliga’s promising young goalkeepers.
Dortmund’s interest in Backhaus suggests they are already planning for the future, with Kobel attracting interest from clubs in England and Spain. Securing a talented young goalkeeper like Backhaus would provide Dortmund with stability in that position for years to come. The increased competition for Backhaus could drive up his price, potentially leading to a significant transfer fee for Werder Bremen.
Should Backhaus move to Dortmund, he would compete with Kobel for the starting position, offering a fresh challenge and potentially pushing both goalkeepers to improve. His arrival would also add depth to Dortmund’s squad, crucial for navigating a demanding season across multiple competitions.
