Borussia Dortmund are preparing to offer centre-back Waldemar Anton a new contract and a greater leadership role within the team, according to reports in Germany. Kicker initially reported the news, suggesting the club is keen to reward the 29-year-old with improved terms beyond his current deal which runs until 2028.
The potential contract extension comes amid speculation linking Anton with a move to Manchester United, but staying with Dortmund now appears the more probable outcome. A new deal would likely extinguish any lingering interest from the Premier League side. Anton has become a key figure in Dortmund’s defence since joining from Hannover 96 in 2022, making 36 appearances across all competitions last season.
This development also coincides with a period of injury concerns for Dortmund’s established leadership. Captain Emre Can is currently sidelined with a cruciate ligament tear, while vice-captain Nico Schlotterbeck is recovering from a medial ligament injury. As a result, Anton is poised to assume a more prominent role within the squad, potentially becoming the team’s third captain following Julian Brandt’s recent departure.
Kicker suggests Anton is the frontrunner to fill the vacant third captain position. Should both Can and Schlotterbeck’s recoveries be delayed, Anton could even find himself wearing the armband at the start of the upcoming Bundesliga campaign. His consistent performances and growing influence in the dressing room have made him a natural candidate for increased responsibility.
Anton earned his first senior international cap for Germany in November 2023, further highlighting his recent form and rising profile. Dortmund’s willingness to offer a new contract demonstrates their commitment to retaining a vital component of their defensive line and solidifies his long-term future at the Signal Iduna Park. This move ensures Dortmund maintains a key player as they look to challenge for domestic and European honours.
