Dortmund thrash Freiburg to cement second place ahead of Ruhr derby return
Borussia Dortmund emphatically tightened their grip on second place in the Bundesliga with a 4-0 victory over SC Freiburg at Signal Iduna Park on Sunday. Goals from Maximilian Beier, Serhou Guirassy, Ramy Bensebaini, and Fábio Silva secured a routine win for Niko Kovac's side, who now sit five points clear of third-placed RB Leipzig with three matches remaining.
The result itself was secondary to a major narrative shift emerging elsewhere in German football, however. According to reports from Sky Germany, Dortmund's historic rivals Schalke 04 are on the brink of securing promotion back to the Bundesliga. Schalke's 3-2 win over Paderborn on Sunday means they need just one more victory to guarantee a top-two finish in the 2. Bundesliga and a return to the top flight, setting the stage for the revival of the famed Ruhr derby next season.
On the pitch, Dortmund were clinical from the outset. Beier opened the scoring in the eighth minute, before Guirassy doubled the lead six minutes later with his 20th goal of the campaign across all competitions. The contest was effectively ended just after the half-hour mark when Bensebaini powered in a header from a corner. Substitute Silva added a late fourth in the 87th minute, capping a flowing team move for only his third goal of the season.
The comprehensive nature of the performance underscores Dortmund's strong finish under Kovac, who has steadied the ship since taking over earlier in the campaign. While the title was long since secured by Bayern Munich, securing direct qualification for the UEFA Champions League group stage was a clear remaining objective, one this result brings closer to fruition.
For Freiburg, the heavy defeat is a setback in their own European aspirations, leaving them in a congested mid-table battle. The focus for Dortmund supporters, however, is now shifting towards the prospect of welcoming Schalke back to the Bundesliga. The potential return of one of Germany's most intense and historic rivalries adds a significant layer of intrigue to the closing weeks of the season and the planning for the next campaign.
