Schick double secures derby win for Leverkusen, piles pressure on Köln
Bayer Leverkusen have taken a significant step towards Champions League qualification with a 2-1 victory over local rivals 1. FC Köln in the Bundesliga's Rhine derby. Patrik Schick scored both goals for the visitors, with Luca Waldschmidt netting a late consolation for a Köln side whose relegation fears were heightened by the defeat at the RheinEnergieSTADION on Saturday.
Leverkusen's win, their fifth consecutive derby victory, moves them firmly into the top-four conversation with just a handful of games remaining in the season. For Köln, the failure to add to their points tally leaves them looking nervously over their shoulder at the relegation places, despite a performance that created numerous chances. The match was decided by a combination of Schick's clinical finishing and Köln's profligacy in front of goal.
The opening period was characterised by Köln's aggressive start, as the home side created two clear opportunities within the first three minutes. Leverkusen, perhaps feeling the pressure of their European ambitions following a midweek DFB-Pokal exit, initially appeared passive. The momentum shifted as the first half progressed, with Schick hitting the crossbar after a defensive error from Köln's Eric Martel in the 10th minute.
Köln were left to rue a catastrophic miss in the 35th minute, when Said El Mala struck the post after intercepting a dreadful backpass from Leverkusen's Jarell Quansah. The pivotal moment arrived just before halftime, when a handball decision against Martel gave Leverkusen a penalty. According to match officials, the ball struck Martel's arm just below shoulder height, a decision debated for its marginal nature. Schick calmly converted the spot-kick to give his side a 1-0 lead at the break.
Köln started the second half brightly but were punished for another missed chance in the 51st minute, when Jakub Kaminski was denied by Leverkusen goalkeeper Janis Blaswich. The visitors launched an immediate counter-attack, finished expertly by Schick, who volleyed home Nathan Tella's cross to double the advantage. Despite having twice as many shots as Leverkusen by the hour mark, Köln could not find a way past Blaswich until the 77th minute, when substitute Luca Waldschmidt scored shortly after entering the fray.
The result underscores Leverkusen's resilience and their continued reliance on Schick, whose brace takes his tally for the season into double figures. For Köln, the performance under coach René Wagner showed positive signs but the outcome highlights a recurring issue with chance conversion that now threatens their top-flight status. Leverkusen next host RB Leipzig in a direct clash for Champions League positioning, while Köln face a crucial trip to Union Berlin.
