Denzel Dumfries has completed a permanent transfer to Real Madrid from Inter Milan, signing a contract that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until 2030. The move brings an end to the Dutch international’s five-year spell with the Nerazzurri, where he made 207 appearances and scored 27 goals. The deal was officially announced by Inter Milan on Friday.
Dumfries joined Inter from PSV Eindhoven in 2021, quickly establishing himself as a key player in Simone Inzaghi’s side. Primarily a right-back, the 28-year-old also proved versatile, frequently deployed as a wing-back in Inter’s 3-5-2 system. He contributed significantly to Inter’s attacking play with his powerful runs and crossing ability, while also demonstrating defensive solidity. Last season, Dumfries featured prominently as Inter secured the Serie A title.
Prior to joining Inter, Dumfries had developed a reputation as one of the Eredivisie’s most promising full-backs. He progressed through the youth ranks at Sparta Rotterdam before moving to Heerenveen and then PSV, where his performances attracted the attention of several European clubs. He has also been a regular feature for the Netherlands national team, representing his country at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
While the financial details of the transfer have not been disclosed, Inter are understood to be satisfied with the fee received for a player who had entered the final years of his contract. Real Madrid have been in the market for a new right-back following the inconsistent form of Dani Carvajal and see Dumfries as a long-term solution in that position. The move provides Dumfries with the opportunity to compete at the highest level of European football and challenge for major honours with one of the world’s most prestigious clubs. This transfer will likely bolster Real Madrid’s defensive options and add another dimension to their attack.
