Netherlands wing-back Denzel Dumfries has stated he is not yet prepared to say goodbye to Inter Milan supporters, despite strong links with a move to Real Madrid. Speaking after the Netherlands’ 5-1 victory over Sweden in a recent international friendly, Dumfries addressed speculation surrounding his future, according to reports in Italian media.
Dumfries delivered two assists in the win, further enhancing his reputation as one of Europe’s most dynamic full-backs. He has been a key player for Inter since joining from PSV Eindhoven in 2021, contributing significantly both defensively and in attack. Last season, he made 33 appearances across all competitions for the Nerazzurri, scoring twice and providing six assists.
When questioned about a potential transfer, Dumfries was firm in his response: “No, no, no. It is not the moment to say goodbye to the Nerazzurri fans.” This comes amid increasing reports suggesting Real Madrid are preparing a bid for the 27-year-old as they seek to bolster their options at right-back. Los Blancos are reportedly impressed by Dumfries’ physicality, pace, and crossing ability.
Dumfries also acknowledged the absence of Italy from the upcoming World Cup, expressing sympathy for friends still playing in Serie A. “Many friends are at home at the moment: it’s hard,” he said. He revealed he regularly communicates with his Inter teammates, including Hakan Calhanoglu, whose Turkey were also eliminated from World Cup contention. “I often hear from my Inter teammates, but not to receive compliments. We are friends and we talk a lot among ourselves.”
While a fee has not been disclosed, Inter are believed to be open to selling Dumfries if their valuation is met. The club are currently navigating a period of financial consolidation and a significant offer from Real Madrid could prove too tempting to resist. Should Dumfries move to the Santiago Bernabéu, he would likely compete with Dani Carvajal for a starting position, adding depth and quality to Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.
