Paulo Dybala has indicated he will leave AS Roma at the end of the season, stating that their upcoming derby against Lazio will likely be his final appearance at the Stadio Olimpico for the club. The Argentinian forward made the comments following Roma’s 3-2 victory over Parma on Sunday, according to reports in La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Dybala arrived at Roma in the summer of 2022 from Juventus, but his time in the Italian capital has been hampered by injuries and inconsistency. Across 138 appearances for the club, he has scored 45 goals, but has never managed to play more than 28 Serie A matches in a single season, starting only 13 league games this year. Despite moments of brilliance, a consistent run of form has eluded the 32-year-old.
The player revealed that Roma have not approached him regarding a contract extension, and his current deal includes a clause allowing him to depart after the final two matches of the season. He declined to elaborate further on his future plans, stating he preferred to keep his opinion to himself for the time being. This lack of contract talks suggests Roma are not prioritising a renewal for Dybala.
Speculation is mounting that Dybala could return to Argentina to join Boca Juniors. After 14 years in Serie A with Palermo, Juventus, and Roma, a move back to his homeland would represent a significant change in his career. He was not included in Lionel Scaloni’s recent Argentina squad for the upcoming international fixtures, potentially adding to his desire for a fresh start. Roma currently sit fifth in Serie A, level on points with AC Milan, and still have a chance to qualify for the Champions League, a feat they haven’t achieved since 2018. However, Dybala’s departure appears set regardless of their final league position.
