Edin Džeko has revealed he is evaluating his future with Schalke 04, with his current contract set to expire this summer. The 40-year-old forward, who joined the club on a free transfer from Fiorentina in January, has been instrumental in their promotion back to the Bundesliga, contributing six goals and three assists in ten appearances for the Gelsenkirchen side.
Speaking at a media roundtable attended by Bulinews.com, Džeko stated he is contemplating whether to retire after representing Bosnia & Herzegovina at the upcoming World Cup, extend his stay with Schalke for another season in the Bundesliga, or explore alternative options. He emphasized the importance of discussions with the club before making a final decision. “Let's see if I'm going to play in the Bundesliga next year,” he said. “I'm thinking about my future every day. We'll see. I have to talk to Schalke about their plans first, and then we'll decide.”
Džeko had previously received an offer from Paris FC before choosing Schalke, a decision he now considers positive. His move to Germany coincided with a resurgence in form, playing a crucial role in Bosnia & Herzegovina’s successful World Cup play-off campaign against Wales and Italy in March. He expressed his satisfaction with his time at Schalke, highlighting the club’s passionate fanbase and the positive atmosphere. “This is a great club with great fans,” Džeko commented. “I can already see so much love for me; that's why I'm even more happy that I made the decision to come here.”
The experienced striker acknowledged facing challenging periods throughout his career, citing his time at Fiorentina as an example, but emphasized his mental fortitude in overcoming adversity. “There have been times when the results didn't go well,” he explained. “But the one thing I can say about myself is that I was always strong in the head.” He also expressed surprise at continuing his career at age 40, attributing his longevity to dedicated physical conditioning and listening to his body. “I didn't think I would still be playing at 40,” he admitted. “I'm listening to my body as well and doing a lot of work before and after training.”
Džeko’s career has spanned numerous high-profile clubs, including Wolfsburg, Manchester City, Roma, and AC Milan, where he has consistently demonstrated his goal-scoring prowess. While his future remains uncertain, his immediate focus is on representing his nation at the World Cup. A decision regarding his club future will follow discussions with Schalke officials, potentially extending his career for another season in the Bundesliga.
