Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad, according to reports. The Saudi Arabian newspaper Arriyadiyah claims Al-Ittihad recently initiated discussions with Eberl regarding the possibility of him becoming their new sporting director.
However, these discussions are reportedly at a standstill due to disagreements over the club’s future sporting strategy. Eberl only joined Bayern Munich in February 2024, arriving from RB Leipzig, and currently holds a contract with the Bundesliga champions until 2027.
Prior to his arrival at Bayern, Eberl spent over a decade at Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he established a reputation as a highly capable sporting director, overseeing periods of sustained Champions League qualification. His departure from Gladbach was initially acrimonious, stemming from disagreements over the club’s direction, but he has quickly settled into his role in Munich.
Despite reports suggesting some critical assessment of his work by the Bayern supervisory board, Eberl has publicly expressed openness to extending his contract with the club beyond 2027. He has spoken positively about his long-term future at the Allianz Arena, but no formal extension has yet been agreed.
Sky Germany have since refuted the claims made by Arriyadiyah, reporting that Eberl has not held talks with Al-Ittihad and that his priority remains securing a contract extension with Bayern Munich. Sky’s sources indicate that Eberl is fully committed to his role at Bayern and focused on shaping the club’s sporting future. This conflicting information leaves Eberl’s future uncertain, though the German outlet’s report suggests he will remain in Bavaria.
Should Eberl remain at Bayern, he will be instrumental in rebuilding the squad following a disappointing 2023-24 season and preparing for the future under a new head coach.
