Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has indicated a willingness to extend his contract with the club, though formal negotiations are currently on hold. Speaking to DAZN, Eberl stated he feels “very, very comfortable” at Bayern and is open to remaining beyond his current deal, which runs until the summer of 2027, provided his work is viewed favorably by the club’s leadership.
Eberl arrived at Bayern in 2024 after a successful spell at RB Leipzig, where he was instrumental in building a competitive squad. Prior to Leipzig, he spent over a decade at Borussia Mönchengladbach, initially as a scout before rising to the position of sporting director, establishing a reputation for shrewd recruitment and player development. His appointment at Bayern was seen as a key step in restructuring the club’s football operations following a period of upheaval.
Despite expressing his contentment, Eberl acknowledged a challenging initial period at the Allianz Arena, attributing this to the presence of “strong personalities” within the club structure. He emphasized that constructive debate and challenge are ultimately beneficial for a club of Bayern’s stature, fostering a dynamic environment for decision-making.
However, any potential contract extension is contingent on the club initiating discussions, which are currently prohibited by contractual regulations. Uli Hoeneß, Bayern’s supervisory board member and honorary president, confirmed to DAZN that board contracts cannot be extended more than one year before their expiration date. Hoeneß revealed that Eberl’s future was first discussed at a board meeting two weeks prior, but stressed the importance of waiting until July to begin formal talks.
Hoeneß also indicated that internal discussions regarding Eberl’s performance have already begun, suggesting the club is evaluating his impact since his arrival. The timing of the potential extension will likely depend on Bayern’s performance in the upcoming season and Eberl’s success in shaping the squad for the future. A long-term commitment to Eberl would provide stability and continuity to Bayern’s sporting strategy.
