Elche manager Eder Sarabia has unexpectedly resigned from his position, the club confirmed on Monday. The announcement comes despite successfully guiding Los Franjiverdes to another season in La Liga with a 1-1 draw against Girona on the final day of the campaign.
Sarabia cited personal reasons for his departure, stating the demanding nature of the profession had taken a toll on his family life. He emphasized there were no issues with the club’s hierarchy and expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to manage Elche over the past two seasons.
Speaking at an emotional press conference, Sarabia explained the decision was made with his wife on Sunday. He expressed a desire to focus on his relationship with his wife and spend more time with his two young children, acknowledging the physical and emotional strain that management places on personal relationships. He also indicated a need for personal and professional development, stating he would not be seeking another coaching role for several months.
Sarabia arrived at Elche following a successful stint at Andorra, where he secured promotion to Segunda División and subsequently maintained their status in the league. He then led Elche to the Segunda División title in his first season, followed by a crucial La Liga survival this year. His work at Elche has significantly enhanced his reputation within Spanish football, and he is expected to attract interest from other La Liga clubs when he decides to return to management.
During his time at the Martinez Valero, Sarabia cultivated an attractive playing style and fostered a positive atmosphere, transforming the stadium into a formidable home ground. His departure leaves Elche searching for a new manager, but his legacy as the coach who secured back-to-back promotions and maintained their La Liga status will endure.
