Eintracht Frankfurt have decided to relieve Albert Riera of his managerial duties at the end of the season, according to Sky Sports. The decision follows a period of unrest both on and off the pitch, culminating in public disagreements and a perceived loss of authority from the 44-year-old coach.
Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports the decision was made internally within the club. Riera initially enjoyed a positive start to his tenure with Frankfurt, but issues arose last month, most notably a public dispute regarding a reported rift with forward Jonathan Burkardt. This incident appeared to destabilize the team and undermined Riera’s standing.
Riera took over at Frankfurt in February, replacing Dino Toppmöller. Prior to joining the Bundesliga side, he managed Real Zaragoza in Spain’s Segunda División, but was dismissed after a poor run of results. His appointment at Frankfurt was seen as a gamble, given his relatively limited experience at the highest level.
Frankfurt currently sit eighth in the Bundesliga table, one point behind SC Freiburg, who recently reached the Europa League semi-finals. The club still have a chance to qualify for European competition next season, a target that will likely influence the search for a new manager. Plettenberg’s reporting indicates the club has already compiled a shortlist of potential replacements.
Among the names being considered is Matthias Jaissle, who has recently achieved success managing Al Ahli, winning consecutive Asian Champions League titles. The other three candidates on the shortlist were not immediately named by Sky Sports. The swift decision to move on from Riera suggests Frankfurt are prioritizing stability and a clear vision for the future.
