Eintracht Frankfurt have decided that under-pressure head coach Albert Riera will remain in charge for Friday's Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund. According to a report from Bild, the club's hierarchy held a crisis meeting following a damaging 1-2 defeat to Hamburger SV at the weekend, but have opted against an immediate change.
The discussions, which reportedly involved captain Robin Koch among others, concluded that the Spaniard would see out the final two matches of the season, starting with the visit of Dortmund. The primary reason cited by the German publication is that board member for sport Markus Krösche does not have sufficient time to secure a permanent replacement before Friday's fixture and is reluctant to appoint an interim coach for such a short period.
Despite this temporary reprieve, it is considered certain within the club that Riera will not continue as head coach beyond the current campaign. His tenure, which began in the summer of 2023, has been marked by inconsistency, with the team currently sitting in sixth place but having won only one of their last five Bundesliga matches. The loss to second-tier Hamburger SV in a friendly was a particularly jarring result that intensified scrutiny on his position.
Bild has named several potential successors, including former Eintracht striker and club legend Alex Meier, ex-coach Adi Hütter, and veteran manager Friedhelm Funkel. The search for a permanent appointment is now expected to begin in earnest, with the club aiming for a fresh direction ahead of next season. For Riera, the focus shifts immediately to preparing a team that must face a Champions League-chasing Dortmund side, a match that could now serve as a final audition, albeit with his departure already decided.
The decision provides short-term stability but underscores the broader dissatisfaction with the team's recent trajectory. The outcome of the final two matches could still influence the mood around the club and its supporters as Frankfurt look to secure European qualification and plan for a significant summer transition in the dugout.
