Ajax Amsterdam are nearing an agreement to sign Caio Henrique from AS Monaco, according to L’Équipe. The deal is reportedly worth €10 million plus €3 million in bonuses, with Monaco retaining a 25% sell-on clause. The 29-year-old Brazilian international, who has six caps for his country, has entered the final year of his contract with the Ligue 1 club.
Henrique arrived at Monaco from Atlético Madrid in 2020 for a fee of €8 million. During his time in the Principality, he has made 211 appearances across all competitions, contributing three goals and 41 assists. He has become a consistent performer for Monaco, primarily featuring as a dynamic attacking full-back in their system.
Ajax finished fifth in the Eredivisie last season and are looking to rebuild their squad under a new managerial setup. The pursuit of Henrique suggests a desire to add experience and attacking impetus to their defensive options. The Dutch club will now need to agree personal terms with the player to finalize the transfer.
Monaco will be looking to recoup a significant portion of the fee they paid for Henrique three years ago, while also securing a percentage of any future sale. The sell-on clause provides a potential financial benefit should Henrique perform well and attract further interest down the line. This move allows Monaco to generate funds and avoid losing Henrique on a free transfer next summer.
Should Henrique complete his move to Amsterdam, he will likely compete for a starting position with existing Ajax left-backs. The transfer represents a significant addition for Ajax as they aim to challenge for higher league positions in the upcoming season.
