Arsenal make exploratory approach for Sporting CP's Maxi Araujo
Arsenal have initiated exploratory talks with Sporting CP over a potential move for versatile defender Maxi Araujo, according to a report from Portuguese outlet Record. The Gunners have made contact regarding the 26-year-old Uruguayan international, who is also a target for Premier League rivals Chelsea and Tottenham. The report describes Arsenal's move as an 'attack' for the player's signature, indicating a proactive approach in a competitive market.
Araujo, who primarily operates as a left-back for Sporting but also plays as a winger for Uruguay, has attracted significant attention following a season in which he contributed six goals and four assists across all competitions. His performances since joining the Lisbon club from Mexican side Toluca in 2024 have established him as one of Liga Portugal's standout wide players. Arsenal's interest is facilitated by their existing relationship with Sporting, having secured the transfer of striker Viktor Gyokeres from the same club last summer.
The potential move comes amid anticipated changes to Arsenal's left flank. Forward options Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard have both been linked with possible departures, while the long-term situation of left-back Riccardo Calafiori has also been subject to speculation. Araujo's ability to cover both defensive and attacking roles on the left side is seen as a valuable asset, though his attacking output is not considered at the level of a marquee winger signing.
Sporting are under no pressure to sell and will not demand his full €80 million release clause be met, but Record indicates the Portuguese champions have set a firm asking price of €60 million. This significant fee means any deal would likely be contingent on Arsenal generating funds through player sales first. The club's initial approach is described as preliminary, with no guarantee a transfer will materialise.
Chelsea and Tottenham's previously reported interest, along with alleged admiration from Atletico Madrid, creates a crowded field for Araujo's signature. This competition increases the likelihood that another club could secure the player before Arsenal are in a position to formalise their interest with a concrete offer. For Sporting, the situation represents another opportunity to secure a major fee for a key asset, continuing their successful model of player trading.
