Aston Villa have reportedly increased their interest in signing Kerim Alajbegovic, the 18-year-old Bosnian forward who recently impressed at the World Cup, though they face competition from several other clubs. Villa’s transfer team, led by Unai Emery, are evaluating potential additions to the squad in preparation for their upcoming Champions League campaign in the 2026/27 season, with attacking reinforcements a key priority.
Alajbegovic is currently set to return to Bayer Leverkusen on July 1st, after Red Bull Salzburg’s €8million (£6.9m / $9.2m) buy-back clause was activated. Following a breakout season with Salzburg where he scored 13 goals and provided four assists across all competitions, his current valuation is estimated to be between €25-30million (£25.9m / $34.6m), a figure likely boosted by his performance for Bosnia at the World Cup. He scored a notable goal against Qatar which could see Bosnia advance to the knockout stages.
According to Corriere della Sera, Villa are actively pursuing Alajbegovic, but face strong competition from Atalanta, who are undergoing a rebuild under new sporting director Cristiano Guintoli. Atalanta are reportedly viewing the versatile attacker – capable of playing on either wing or as a second striker – as a crucial part of their future plans. Newcastle United have also been mentioned as potential suitors, though a move to Villa is currently considered more probable.
TEAMtalk sources reported on June 11th that Sunderland had also entered the race for Alajbegovic, following their own qualification for European competition. Despite having a long-term contract with Leverkusen, the Bundesliga club are understood to be open to offers should a suitable bid arrive. While Alajbegovic is reportedly keen to make an impact at Leverkusen, a competitive offer could tempt them to sell. His continued strong performances at the World Cup could potentially spark a bidding war, increasing his value further.
Securing Alajbegovic would provide Villa with a promising young talent capable of contributing immediately to Emery’s attack, and offering long-term potential as the club establishes itself in European competition.
