Barcelona are monitoring Newcastle United midfielder Lewis Miley as a potential summer transfer target, according to reports from Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo. This comes after the Catalan club recently completed a deal for Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon in late May, a transfer valued at £75 million including add-ons.
Miley, 20, has emerged as a key player for Newcastle, making 80 appearances for the club since being promoted to the first team by Eddie Howe in 2023. Last season, the versatile midfielder featured 34 times, scoring three goals and providing four assists, and has even demonstrated an ability to fill in at right-back. Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has identified Miley as one of five young players of interest, alongside Lennart Karl of Bayern Munich, Kees Smit of AZ Alkmaar, Rodrigo Mora of FC Porto, and Ibrahim Maza of Bayer Leverkusen.
Mundo Deportivo describes Miley as a “complete midfielder” with maturity beyond his years, a good physique, and the ability to play in multiple central midfield roles. The report suggests that Barcelona’s successful transfer of Gordon, facilitated by the Unique Sports Group agency, could potentially smooth the path for a move for Miley, as the agency also represents the young midfielder.
However, Newcastle recently strengthened their position regarding Miley by agreeing to a new contract that will keep him at St James’ Park until 2032. This new deal provides the club with a strong negotiating position should Barcelona, or any other interested party, make a formal offer. Other Newcastle midfield transfer news includes continued speculation surrounding Sandro Tonali and a potential move for Cologne forward Said El Mala, with Newcastle set to compete with Nottingham Forest for his signature.
