Barcelona are aiming to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid in a deal potentially worth €170 million, according to reports emerging from Spain. The Catalan club see Alvarez as their primary target to bolster their attack, particularly as a replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
Barcelona have already secured the signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle for €70 million and manager Hansi Flick is prioritizing the addition of a natural striker. Previous offers of €150 million from Real Madrid were rejected by Atletico, and Barcelona are hoping to persuade the Madrid club to consider their bids despite initial resistance. Barcelona’s current offer stands at €135 million plus €15 million in add-ons.
Financial constraints have hampered Barcelona’s efforts thus far, but a potential sale of Raphinha to Al-Hilal could significantly improve their position. Brazilian outlet ge globo reports that Al-Hilal, who previously expressed interest in Raphinha two years ago, have reignited their pursuit of the winger. The Saudi club are reportedly prepared to offer Raphinha a four-year contract worth approximately €170 million, quadrupling his current salary at Barcelona.
Raphinha has reportedly informed Al-Hilal that he will not consider a move until after the 2026 World Cup, despite the Saudi side’s eagerness to finalize a deal quickly. The Brazilian international previously acknowledged the substantial impact the 2024 Saudi offer had on his thinking, stating it could have resolved financial issues for his family. While Al-Hilal’s offer to Barcelona remains undisclosed, it is expected that the La Liga side would only agree to a sale if it facilitated the signing of Alvarez and a replacement for Raphinha.
Alvarez has been a key player for Atletico Madrid, and his departure would represent a significant loss for the club. However, the substantial transfer fee offered by Barcelona could prove too tempting to resist. Should Barcelona successfully secure Alvarez, it would significantly strengthen their attacking options and provide Flick with a focal point in attack. The potential sale of Raphinha, while undesirable, would provide the financial means to achieve this goal.
