Bayer Leverkusen stage stunning six-goal comeback to thrash Wolfsburg
Bayer Leverkusen produced a breathtaking second-half display to overturn a two-goal deficit and secure a remarkable 6-3 victory over VfL Wolfsburg at the BayArena on Saturday. The result reinforces Leverkusen's status as Bundesliga title contenders while leaving Wolfsburg shell-shocked after a dramatic collapse.
Wolfsburg had looked in control after a chaotic first half, leading 3-2 at the interval. Jonas Wind opened the scoring, capitalising on a defensive error to net his first goal since May, before Alejandro Grimaldo equalised from the penalty spot for Leverkusen. Wind then turned provider immediately from the restart, setting up Joakhim Mæhle for a spectacular long-range strike to restore Wolfsburg's lead. A penalty from Christian Eriksen, after Edmond Tapsoba fouled Mohamed Amoura, made it 3-1, though Grimaldo struck again just before the break to keep Leverkusen in touch.
The game turned decisively seven minutes into the second half when another penalty was awarded, this time for a foul on Nathan Tella. Substitute Patrik Schick, introduced at half-time, calmly converted to level the score. From that point, Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen side assumed complete control, dominating possession and overwhelming a retreating Wolfsburg defence.
The comeback was completed in the 67th minute when Tapsoba poked home from close range after a goalmouth scramble following a Grimaldo cross. Leverkusen then extended their lead just four minutes later, as Exequiel Palacios's corner was met by the head of Ibrahim Maza. A sixth goal arrived deep into injury time, with substitutes Ernest Poku and Malik Tillman combining, the latter firing into the roof of the net to complete the rout.
The victory sees Leverkusen maintain their formidable form this season, showcasing the attacking resilience and tactical flexibility that has become their hallmark under Alonso. For Wolfsburg and manager Dieter Hecking, the manner of the defeat, surrendering a commanding position so comprehensively, will raise serious questions about their defensive solidity and game management. The result is a significant statement in the Bundesliga title race, underlining Leverkusen's capacity to win in spectacular fashion even when not at their most fluent.
