Bayern Munich confirm signing of Mainz defender Stefan Posch
Bayern Munich have completed the signing of Mainz 05 defender Stefan Posch, the clubs confirmed on Friday. The Austria international has signed a four-year contract with the Bavarian giants for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of €15 million, and will join when the summer transfer window opens.
The deal was finalized ahead of Bayern's trip to face Mainz in the Bundesliga this weekend, a match for which Posch was named in the home side's starting lineup. The 27-year-old centre-back has been a mainstay for Mainz since joining from Hoffenheim in 2022, making over 90 appearances and establishing himself as a key figure in their defence.
According to Sky Sports Germany, Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl identified Posch as a target to add experience and depth to the squad's back line. With Matthijs de Ligt's future uncertain and Dayot Upamecano having faced injury issues this season, Bayern have moved to secure a proven Bundesliga performer. Posch's consistent performances for a mid-table Mainz side, known for its defensive organization, are understood to have impressed the Bayern hierarchy.
For Mainz, the sale represents significant income for a player entering the final year of his contract. The club's sporting director Christian Heidel acknowledged the difficulty of losing a key player but stated the offer met the club's valuation and allows for reinvestment in the squad. Mainz are currently in a battle to avoid relegation, sitting just above the playoff place, and Posch's departure will be felt, but the financial boost could aid their rebuilding plans.
The move marks a significant step up for Posch, who began his career at Admira Wacker Mödling before moving to Hoffenheim. He has earned 23 caps for Austria and was part of their squad for Euro 2024. His physical presence, aerial ability, and comfort in a back three or back four are seen as assets that will fit into new Bayern coach Vincent Kompany's system.
Posch's arrival is Bayern's first major defensive signing of the upcoming transfer window and signals the start of a planned refresh under Kompany. The defender is expected to compete immediately for a starting role alongside the likes of Kim Min-jae and Eric Dier, adding a different profile to Bayern's central defensive options as they look to reclaim the Bundesliga title next season.
