Bayern Munich could be required to pay an additional €1 million to 1. FC Köln should goalkeeper Jonas Urbig make his senior debut for the German national team, according to Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger. The potential payment is part of the deal that took Urbig from Köln to Bayern in January 2025 for a reported €9 million.
The agreement between the two Bundesliga clubs includes a series of performance-related add-ons that could see the total transfer fee rise to €15 million. The international debut clause is one such add-on, specifically triggering a €1 million payment to Köln upon Urbig’s first appearance for Germany’s senior squad. The Rhineland club also negotiated a sell-on clause as part of the transfer.
Urbig, 22, received his first call-up to the German national team in March but was forced to withdraw from the squad due to an injury. He currently plies his trade as a backup goalkeeper for Bayern, primarily featuring for their reserve team. He has yet to make a competitive appearance for the senior Bayern side.
Bayern signed Urbig as a promising young talent with potential to develop into a top-level goalkeeper, providing competition and depth in the squad. Köln, meanwhile, secured a financially beneficial deal that rewards them should Urbig achieve international success. The goalkeeper is now aiming to impress Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann and earn a place in the squad for upcoming international tournaments, including the World Cup.
The add-on structure reflects Bayern’s willingness to invest in promising players while mitigating risk through performance-based payments. This allows the Bavarian giants to secure talent without immediately committing to a large upfront fee, while also incentivizing the player’s development and success.
