Chelsea are prepared to consider offers of €88 million (£75m) for defender Malo Gusto this summer, according to reports. The France international has been a regular feature for the Blues since joining from Lyon in 2023 for a fee of €30m, making 134 first-team appearances and contributing to 20 goals.
However, Gusto’s form towards the end of the 2025-26 season reportedly raised concerns, leading the club to consider a sale as part of a larger squad overhaul ahead of Xabi Alonso’s first season as manager. The recent acquisition of Marco Palestra from Atalanta for €55m has further cast doubt on Gusto’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge.
Manchester City have been identified as potential suitors, with new manager Enzo Maresca reportedly keen on reuniting with Gusto, whom he previously worked with at Chelsea. However, sources indicate that City are currently unwilling to meet Chelsea’s asking price.
Despite his recent dip in form, analysis suggests that selling Gusto could be a misstep for Chelsea. While he has struggled with consistency, particularly in tracking runners at the back post, he remains a tactically flexible and athletic player who excels in possession. Furthermore, Palestra, despite his potential, is still a relatively inexperienced player with only 53 senior appearances.
Reece James’ ongoing injury problems also complicate the situation. Though his fitness has improved, a recent hamstring injury has cast doubt on his availability for the remainder of the World Cup, and his history of setbacks suggests he may require careful management throughout the season. Selling Gusto would place significant pressure on Palestra and potentially limit Alonso’s tactical options, especially if James is unavailable.
