Chelsea have completed the signing of full-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta for a fee of €60 million, the clubs have confirmed. The 21-year-old has agreed a long-term contract with the Blues, running until June 30, 2033, and will earn €5 million net per season plus bonuses.
Palestra spent last season on loan at Cagliari, where he impressed with his performances, and now makes the move to the Premier League after coming through the Atalanta youth system. He joined Atalanta as a child and progressed through their youth ranks, eventually making his debut for the first team. In a post on Instagram, Palestra thanked Atalanta, the Percassi family, the club’s management, coaches, staff, teammates and fans for their support over the past eleven years.
The transfer comes as a disappointment to Inter, who were heavily interested in signing Palestra this summer. According to reports in Italy, Inter saw their approach rebuffed, with their sporting director, Piero Ausilio, stating the club had received a significant setback in their pursuit. Chelsea’s intervention and willingness to meet Atalanta’s demands ultimately proved decisive.
Atalanta will also receive 10% of any future resale fee for Palestra. The club released a statement acknowledging the departure of a player who had been with them since the age of ten, wishing him all the best in his future career. The move represents a significant financial windfall for Atalanta, known for their astute player trading.
Palestra’s arrival at Stamford Bridge bolsters Chelsea’s options at full-back, providing competition for existing players. The signing aligns with Chelsea’s strategy of investing in young talent with high potential, and he is expected to contribute to the team’s long-term ambitions.
