Chelsea are exploring a potential transfer for Brighton & Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck, with optimism growing that an agreement can be reached, according to reports from David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano. The 35-year-old has one year remaining on his contract at the AMEX Stadium and is being considered as a potential addition to Xabi Alonso’s squad ahead of his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have identified Welbeck as a target to add experience to their forward line, following similar pursuits of Granit Xhaka and John Stones this summer. Alonso is believed to have personally endorsed the signing, valuing Welbeck’s leadership qualities within the team. Talks are currently in the early stages, but both Chelsea and Welbeck’s representatives are hopeful of a positive outcome.
The potential arrival of Welbeck could trigger a number of departures from Chelsea’s attacking ranks. The club are reportedly open to offers for Liam Delap and Emmanuel Emegha, despite Emegha only joining from Strasbourg earlier in July. Marc Guiu is also expected to leave, either on a permanent transfer or on loan. Nicolas Jackson, who spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich, has also been linked with an exit, while David Datro Fofana is set to be sold permanently.
Welbeck enjoyed a prolific season for Brighton, scoring 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances – his best ever return in the competition. Notably, he has a strong record against Chelsea, netting six times in his last seven Premier League matches against them. Brighton are aware of Chelsea’s interest, but formal discussions have not yet resulted in a formal bid.
Chelsea may need to finalize several player sales before intensifying their pursuit of Welbeck, as they currently have six first-team strikers on their books, alongside academy prospect Shumaira Mheuka, who is likely to be sent out on loan to gain regular playing time. The addition of Welbeck would provide a different profile in attack, offering experience and a proven goalscoring record.
