Chicago Fire have emerged as surprise contenders to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka, according to reports from The Athletic. The MLS club have begun discussions with Bayern regarding a potential move for the German international, who is currently participating in the World Cup hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Goretzka, 28, has been a key figure for Bayern since joining from Schalke in 2018, making over 200 appearances for the Bavarian giants and winning five Bundesliga titles. However, recent speculation has suggested the player may be open to a new challenge, with AC Milan previously considered frontrunners for his signature. The Italian club’s interest had appeared strong in recent weeks, but Chicago’s intervention has complicated the situation.
The move to Chicago would see Goretzka follow in the footsteps of fellow German international Bastian Schweinsteiger, who enjoyed a successful spell with the Fire from 2019 to 2020. Chicago, seeking to bolster their midfield options, are hoping to entice Goretzka with a competitive offer and the opportunity to experience a different style of football. No fee or contract details have yet been disclosed.
It remains unclear whether Goretzka will favour a move to MLS over continuing his career at a top European club. The player’s representatives are reportedly assessing all options, and his preference will likely be a significant factor in determining his future. There has also been speculation, fuelled by the same reports, that Robert Lewandowski, formerly of Bayern Munich and currently at Barcelona, could potentially join Goretzka in Chicago, though this remains highly speculative at this stage.
Should Goretzka opt for the move, it would represent a significant coup for Chicago Fire and a further indication of the growing ambition within MLS to attract established European talent. The addition of a player of his calibre would undoubtedly raise the profile of the league and provide a boost to the club’s on-field performance.
