Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of Liam Claude Kanté from NK Lokomotiva Zagreb, the club confirmed. The central defender, a U-16 international for Croatia, has signed a contract with the Bundesliga side and will initially join their youth setup. The transfer sees Dortmund win a competitive race for the highly-rated prospect, fending off interest from several other European clubs.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Kanté’s contract has already been finalised, with the player set to link up with Dortmund’s U-19 team. While he possesses significant potential, the club are expected to integrate him gradually into the first-team squad under coach Niko Kovač. This measured approach reflects Dortmund’s commitment to developing young talent and providing a pathway to senior football.
Kanté has emerged as a standout player for Lokomotiva Zagreb’s youth teams, attracting attention from across Europe. He has already represented Croatia at the U-16 level, further highlighting his international pedigree. Several Bundesliga rivals, including Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim, were reportedly keen on securing his signature, alongside Austrian side RB Salzburg and teams from Italy. Dortmund’s success in securing the deal underscores their continued ability to attract promising young players.
The financial details of the transfer were not disclosed by either club. However, given Kanté’s age and current status as a youth player, the fee is not expected to be substantial. Dortmund have a strong track record of identifying and nurturing young talent, with players like Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho having come through their ranks to become established stars. This signing continues that tradition, adding a promising defender to their burgeoning youth system. The arrival of Kanté provides further competition and depth within the Dortmund youth ranks, and offers a long-term solution in central defence.
